Clari Cantus: Choir of the Year 2010-2011

Following a splendid audition in Ghent and an excellent performance during the semi finals, Clari Cantus was selected for the Final of the "Choir of the Year 2010 - 2011" competition. This prestigious competition is organised by "Koor&Stem" and "Canvas", one of the TV channels of the Flemish public broadcasting company. Only 6 choirs, including 5 youth choirs, made it to the final and all of them were hoping to win the competition.

Cantilene (Ekeren), well-known in the competition, was the first choir to perform, followed by the only adult choir in the final, 4-Tune (Retie). The female choir Villanella (Laakdal) closed the first half of the final. Clari Cantus entered the stage of Studio 4 at Flagey around 20h40. As the audience applauded, Clari Cantus positioned themselves for their first piece, the magnificent Sleep by Eric Whitacre. They went on with the suite by Kurt Bikkembergs, who added music to five poems of Paul van Ostaijen. After this funny suite with matching choreography, they concluded their final performance with Abendlied of Josef Rheinberger. After another strong applause, they left the stage with a smile.

After concluding performances by Waelrant (Antwerp) and Rondinella (Knokke-Heist), the jury had the onerous task of deliberating. The ceremony began with a few minor awards. The "Klara-Canvas Award", presented by a jury and Internet voting went to Waelrant, just like the prize of the audience (a piece of art). From the celebrated composer Vic Nees, Villanella received the "Koor&Stem Prize" (best contemporary dutch song) for their performance of two pieces by Kurt Bikkembergs. When the head of the jury, Kurt Bikkembergs, came on stage to announce the winner, all six choirs were extremely excited. Winner in the category 'Youth Choirs' and at the same time Choir of the Year 2010 - 2011: Clari Cantus! We are very pleased to carry this title for the next two years.
